Quotable advice that I've been gifted from talented librarians- a post in progress:
Strive to be neutral. It is a muscle you must develop. To the horrible parents, the helicopter parents, the angry patrons, the flirtatious patrons: neutrality is our way of being. Take appropriate actions as needed, but never let your personal preferences affect your customer service.
During storytime, if you have one kid running around the room, that's fine, continue doing what you are doing. If you have two running around, stop. There's something mysteriously magnetic about two running toddlers and they will surely collide.
Although we cannot often rescue kids from troubled backgrounds, what we can do is be that bright spot in their day. Focus on being a bright spot and giving them hope for the future.
